Is what you offer therapy?
No, I’m not a qualified psychotherapist, but the nature of the work that I offer is therapeutic and many of my clients experience deep and profound healing and transformation.
Horses as Teachers programmes are for learning and awareness, and personal growth and development. However, the holistic nature of the Eponaquest based work and the sensitivity and spirituality of the horses can bring forward deep emotions or unresolved issues for some participants. This work has a therapeutic effect, but it is not therapy. If advised, it is beneficial that you are willing to seek professional help to deal with anything that may come up for you. In this case professional recommendations can be provided is required.
Why did you choose the Eponaquest approach?
I didn’t! – it found me through the journey with my horse Jack (see My Story for more details)
What do you enjoy most in terms of client progress?
The ‘aha’ moments. I believe the most powerful thing about the coaching approach is the ability to help each client to access their own answers, intuition and inner guidance, and to blend that with the theoretical information that I can provide.
For me the most joyful part of my work is facilitating a combination of theoretical, visual (demonstration) and practical (kinaesthetic) experiences, to help my clients to have ‘light bulb’ moments and ‘corrective emotional experiences’.
What made you follow this path of riding training?
I grew up with a good ethos of horsemanship, my Mum was a great teacher. The challenge for me was that when I wanted to progress I found approaches that didn’t feel right, but seemed to be accepted and the norm. I am grateful for my BHS training, it gave me a very solid foundation to add to my early teaching from my Mum, but I maintained my own natural ethos and read many classical riding training books.
One of the biggest influences on my teaching came when I studied Life Coaching and had the opportunity to practise my newly learned skills (many of which were based in Sports Psychology) whilst training the Modern Pentathletes in their Show Jumping discipline. This is what changed my style from teaching to coaching.
The biggest advancement in the way in which I coached was influenced by my training and studying with Linda Kohanov of Eponaquest, Peggy Cummings of Connected Riding and Philippe Karl of The School or Legerete.
I’m scared of horses; does that matter for a 1:1 EFL session or workshop?
NO In fact many people come to EFL experiences to explore and overcome their fear of horses and EFL provides an extremely safe way in which to do that.
